South Africa's townships

 

WE CANNOT TALK ABOUT SOUTH AFRICA'S FUTURE WITHOUT TALKING ABOUT ITS TOWNSHIPS.

Nearly half of South Africa's working-age population — and almost two-thirds of the unemployed — live in areas designated as townships.

For millions of people, the township isn't somewhere they visit.

It's home.

It is where children grow up.

Where businesses try to survive.

Where families build lives.

Where dreams exist alongside poverty, unemployment and crime.

But townships are not simply places of poverty.

They are full of entrepreneurs, teachers, artists, parents, young people and community leaders trying to create something better.

The question should not be:

"What's wrong with the townships?"

Perhaps the better question is:

"What could happen if we invested properly in the people who live there?"
