Human trafficking is not a distant problem

HUMAN TRAFFICKING IS HAPPENING IN SOUTH AFRICA.

We sometimes imagine trafficking as something that happens in another country, to someone else.

It doesn't.

South Africa continues to face trafficking for sexual exploitation, forced labour and other forms of exploitation.

And poverty can make vulnerable people even easier targets.

A promise of a job.

A promise of money.

A promise of a better life.

Sometimes that's all a trafficker needs to get someone into their trap.

Earlier this month, South African authorities continued investigating a Durban case involving allegations of human trafficking, kidnapping and sexual assault.

This is why awareness matters.

Know the warning signs. Talk to your children. Talk to young people. Don't assume trafficking can't happen in your community.
