South Africa's hidden hunger

SOUTH AFRICA HAS FOOD. SO WHY ARE PEOPLE STILL GOING HUNGRY?

This is one of the hardest questions we need to ask.

South Africa remains a major food-producing country.

Yet millions of people still struggle to afford enough nutritious food.

Statistics South Africa's latest poverty analysis found that approximately 10.8 million people remained below the food poverty line in 2025.

Behind that number are families making impossible decisions.

Food or electricity?

Transport or groceries?

Pay the bill or feed the children?

Hunger isn't always visible.

Sometimes it is a child arriving at school pretending everything is fine.

Sometimes it is a parent saying, “I'm not hungry,” because there isn't enough food for everyone.

A country cannot truly prosper while millions of its people are struggling to afford food.

WE CANNOT CHANGE THE WHOLE WORLD.

But we can change someone's world.

We can give a hungry child a meal.

We can help a child get the stationery they need for school.

We can listen to an elderly person who feels forgotten.

We can teach a young person about the dangers of trafficking.

We can support a family going through a difficult time.

We can give someone a reason to believe that people still care.

It doesn't have to be thousands of rand.

It doesn't have to be a huge organisation.

Sometimes it starts with one person deciding:

“I will do something.”

Never underestimate what one small act of kindness can mean to someone who is having a terrible day.

**You may not be able to change the whole world.

But you might change someone's world today.**

SOMETIMES THE NEWS IS TERRIBLE.

But sometimes there is a small piece of good news hidden inside it.

This week, two South African girls who had allegedly been trafficked to Malawi came home.

They were found.

They were protected.

People worked together across borders.

And they were brought back to their families.

It doesn't erase what happened to them.

It doesn't undo the fear or hardship they experienced.

But it does remind us of something important:

People can make a difference.

Authorities can cooperate.

Communities can speak up.

Organisations can help.

And vulnerable people can be found.

There are still many children who need protection.

Many families who need food.

Many communities that need opportunity.

So let's not give up.

Because sometimes, after a very dark story,

someone comes home.

The fake job

"WE HAVE A JOB FOR YOU."

Four words that can sound like hope to someone who desperately needs work.

But sometimes the job doesn't exist.

The money doesn't exist.

And the person making the offer isn't trying to help.

South Africa's Department of Social Development has warned about fake online job offers being used by human traffickers to lure young people.

Some victims have been promised legitimate employment overseas.

Instead, they have ended up trapped and exploited.

The message is simple:

If a job offer sounds too good to be true, stop and investigate.

Who is the employer?

Can the company be verified?

Where exactly will you work?

Who is paying for your travel?

Who will you be working for?

Never hand over your passport or personal documents to someone you don't trust.

And talk to young people about this.

Because sometimes the first step in trafficking is not force.

It's a promise.
