The connection between hunger and exploitation

HUNGER CAN MAKE PEOPLE VULNERABLE.

When someone has nothing, a promise can sound like salvation.

“There's a job waiting for you.”

“You can make good money.”

“We'll provide accommodation.”

“We'll take care of everything.”

For someone desperate enough, those words can sound like an escape from poverty.

But sometimes the promise is a trap.

Human traffickers know that vulnerable people can be easier to exploit.

That is why fighting trafficking isn't only about arresting traffickers.

It is also about tackling poverty.

Creating jobs.

Educating young people.

Giving vulnerable families support.

Making sure people have somewhere safe to turn when they need help.

Protecting people means reducing the desperation that criminals exploit.
