A new 2026 Rural and Township Economy Report has highlighted the severe economic pressures facing township communities.
In large townships, 47% of respondents reported earning less than R3,500 a month.
Behind that figure are families.
People trying to run small businesses.
Young people looking for work.
Parents trying to educate their children.
Entrepreneurs trying to survive while facing barriers to finance, infrastructure, distribution and formal markets.
Townships are often described by what they lack.
But what about what they have?
Talent.
Energy.
Entrepreneurship.
Creativity.
Resilience.
Imagine what could happen if we invested in those strengths instead of simply documenting the problems.
